Alcohol consumption and bacterial infection – severe precipitating factors in liver cirrhosis

Abstract

Liver cirrhosis caused or associated with alcohol consumption represents a severe risk for infections, which significantly increase the hospitalization and mortality rate of these patients. The purpose of the research was to study the correlation between alcohol and bacterial infections as precipitating factors in patients with liver cirrhosis. Materials and methods. An analysis of bibliographic sources on the given topic was performed using the following databases: PubMed, Cohrane Library Register of RCT, ResearchGate, MedLine, EMBASE, Index Medicus. Conclusions. Patients with cirrhosis associated with alcohol consumption represent a major risk of infections, which worsen the course of the disease and increase the number of deaths. The clinic of infections in people with cirrhosis can often be subtle, so complex evaluation, primary and secondary prevention and timely and complex treatment are necessary, which are key points to reduce serious negative consequences, improve quality of life, increase survival rate, reduce the frequency of hospitalizations and additional costs.
