Abstract

Effective communication in the healthcare system is no longer a detail, but a necessity for many parents. The news that their child has a hearing loss comes with many questions, emotions and uncertainties, and the family nurse becomes the point of support, being the first person in the healthcare system who welcomes the parents. The article presented is a first attempt to research the opinion of parents of children with hearing loss about communication with family nurses, as part of the research carried out by students. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, a qualitative study was chosen, which allows exploring every detail related to the communication of the family nurse with parents of children with hearing loss. The research results demonstrate that the family nurse is not at all or little available for communication with the parents of the child with hearing loss about the child and the family problem. For a significant percentage of parents, the support of the family nurse in the process of integrating the child into the family and society was absent. Referral to a specialist or specialized centers seems to be the most common solution in such cases. However, parents also report experiences of attentive, empathetic, caring and supportive attitudes from health care professionals. The article presents conclusions and recommendations for parents, family health care professionals, as well as the health system, intended to strengthen collaboration between service providers and their beneficiaries.
