Abstract

Resistance to antimicrobial drugs (AMR) generates high costs at the level of the entire economy in the form of losses in the workforce and in the level of Gross Domestic Product. The literature review, which included articles published after 2018, was performed based on PubMed and Google Scholar with the use of keyword searches. Terms used for literature selection included AMR, economic impact of AMR, and costs of AMR. The ways of assessing the economic impact of AMR were highlighted. These referred to the evaluation of numerical reduction of the labor force, labor productivity, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). To assess the economic impact of the AMR over GDP and workforce componence in the Republic of Moldova, we used data on the employment rate of the population, number of new cases with AMR, average length of stay in hospital per case with AMR and GDP per person per day. Antimicrobial resistance generates a large impact on the national economy. It contributes to a decrease in the employed workforce, in workforce productivity, and in GDP. In the Republic of Moldova the losses attributable to AMR cases identified through the period 2020-2022 account for 9370600 lei. Further development of national reporting on new cases of AMR will allow to draw a more accurate forecast on the trend of economic impact of AMR.
