Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) remains a significant public health challenge worldwide and in the Republic of Moldova. Effective pharmacotherapy is critical for managing this condition. This study investigates the sales trends of oral antidiabetic drugs, reflecting their accessibility and implementation of newer medicines in clinical practice over four years - 20182021. A retrospective structural analysis of sales data for oral antidiabetic drugs was conducted using information collected from major pharmacy chains and non-network pharmacies across the Republic of Moldova. The analysis identified 24 trade names (10 international nonproprietary names + 3 combinations) used in the treatment of patients with T2DM. A significant increase in sales volume was observed both in terms of units (91.59%) and monetary value (71.28%) from 2018 to 2021, amidst a decreasing average price per package. Metformin dominated sales, showing a preference for established therapies, while newer drug classes such as SGLT2 inhibitors and DPP-4 inhibitors showed substantial growth. The Moldovan oral antidiabetic drug market has shown robust growth, driven by both traditional and innovative medicines. The decrease in average drug prices over the study period may indicate improved patient access to essential medications.
