Abstract

Tuberculosis mortality is one of the main indicators used to assess the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis and the „burden of tuberculosis”. It is important to study mortality in dynamics, as well as the factors influencing the level of this indicator. A comparative, retrospective analysis was carried out of 818 cases of death from tuberculosis in Chisinau in 2 periods: period I (2001-2003) - 621 (75.9%) and period II (2018-2020) - 197 (24,1%) of deaths. Data on tuberculosis patients were obtained from inpatient records and from the Tuberculosis Monitoring and Evaluation Information System (SIME-TB). New cases were identified in 430 (69.2%) deceased in period I and 117 (59.3%) in period II; of them 202 (47.0%) in period I and 64 (54.7%) died due to the progression of the tuberculous process. Pulmonary tuberculosis was diagnosed postmortem in 99(23.3%) in the period I and in 16(13.7%) in period II. Patients with tuberculosis and related diseases died in the first period 129 (30.0%) and 37 (31.6%) in the second period. 191 (30.7%) patients undergoing retreatment died in the first and 80 (12.9%) in the second period. Of them, 163 (85.4%) died in period I and 52 (65.0%) in period II due to the tuberculous progression and 28 (14.6%) in period I and 28(35.0%) due to associated diseases %) in period II. In conclusion, in period II the number of deceased patients decreased 3 times, compared to the period I.
