Abstract

Stroke is the second leading cause of death, the third leading cause of disability and one of the leading causes of dementia worldwide. In order to adequately control stroke, countries need to build national control systems that include capacity building and infrastructure for prehospital, acute care, rehabilitation and prevention. The patient’s path from the place of the disease to the hospital and the correct management of stroke in the acute phase is an important link for achieving success in the treatment of patients. Until 2024, in the Republic of Moldova there was no formalized system of reference, diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute Stroke. Following the international experience, a group of national and international experts argued the basic components of the national model of organizational management of acute stroke patients. During the focus-group sessions, the experts recommended the promotion of continuous training of professionals, the referral of patients with suspected acute stroke to a network of 13 hospitals with Stroke units (11 hospitals with Primary Stroke Centers and 2 with Multidisciplinary Stroke Centers), the eligibility criteria for these hospitals and the responsibilities of the key actors in the national Stroke management system.
