The editorial board of a scientific journal is the highest collegial body responsible for guaranteeing the academic quality, integrity, and ethical standards of the publication. It coordinates the entire editorial workflow, from the submission of manuscripts and the peer-review process to the final publication decision and compliance with national standards.

The main activities and responsibilities are divided into the following categories:

1. Evaluation and assurance of scientific quality

  • Initial screening: Examines submitted manuscripts to verify whether they fit the thematic profile of the journal and comply with the basic technical and scientific requirements.
  • Management of the peer-review process: Selects independent reviewers (field experts) to conduct double-blind evaluations of articles.
  • Editorial decision: Based on the reviews, board members decide whether articles are accepted, rejected, or returned for major/minor revisions.

2. Ethics and academic integrity

  • Plagiarism prevention: Verifies the originality of submitted materials using specialized plagiarism-detection software.
  • Prevention of conflicts of interest: Ensures that the evaluation process remains objective and that no conflicts of interest exist between authors and reviewers.

3. Strategic development and indexing

  • Editorial policy: Establishes the thematic direction, publication frequency, and Open Access policies of the journal.
  • Indexing and visibility: Ensures compliance with the standards required for the journal to be included in national databases (such as the National Bibliometric Instrument) and international indexing systems.

4. Management of the publication process

  • Preparation for publication: Coordinates proofreading, technical editing, assignment of unique identifiers (such as DOI and UDC/CZU codes), and the actual publication of journal issues.
  • Guidance for authors: Develops and periodically updates the author guidelines and technical formatting standards that contributors must follow.
