The editorial advisory council (or advisory board) of a scientific journal is a body made up of recognized experts who provide strategic support to the editorial team. Its main role is to ensure academic quality, compliance with international ethical standards, and the expansion of the journal’s visibility. 
1. Editorial direction and strategy

  • Setting the thematic direction: Identifies new areas of interest and emerging research directions that the journal should address.
  • Strategy development: Advises the editor-in-chief on long-term development strategies, attracting new authors, and indexing in international databases.
  • Promotion: Contributes to increasing the journal’s prestige and impact factor by promoting it within academic communities and at specialized conferences.

2. Quality assurance and evaluation

  • Academic standards: Oversees the maintenance of a high scientific standard for published works.
  • Dispute resolution: Acts as a mediator in cases of appeals regarding peer review or conflicts of interest between authors and editors.
  • Periodic evaluation: Participates in reviewing internal regulations and evaluating the work of executive editors to ensure a transparent publication process.

3. Peer Review and scientific arbitration

  • Manuscript review: Members may themselves act as reviewers for complex and highly specialized articles.
  • Recommendation of experts: Suggests independent and qualified reviewers from their field of expertise to evaluate submissions for publication.

4. Ethics and academic integrity

  • Ethics monitoring: Ensures compliance with ethical standards in research and publishing (preventing plagiarism, fabricated data, or duplicate publication).
  • Advisory role: Provides guidance to the editorial leadership when breaches of publication ethics are reported and decides on possible article retractions.

Note: Unlike the editorial board (which handles operational tasks such as editing, proofreading, and daily communication with authors), the advisory council has a primarily strategic role, intervening to guarantee the scientific quality, direction, and reputation of the publication.
